The Beer Mile

I hope you had a wonderful July 4th, if you are American, and just a wonderful day yesterday if you aren't!

Mike and I hang out with people who like to do crazy things, more than once the beer mile has been mentioned as something that people wanted to do.  If you don't know what the beer mile is here is a brief list of the rules:

The complete list of rules can be found, here.

Some of the rules were modified for this first annual beer mile, for example, no track was used but rather a 1/8th out and back route was marked on the road.

I did not want to participate in the beer mile, but Mike was all over it. Since we biked before the party yesterday we didn't have any running shoes with us so Mike had to borrow our friend Ron's shoes. He also did the "race" in his bathing suit!

 Ready for the beer mile

Mike, Greg, Rick, Ron and a few other brave competitors competed in the beer mile. Mike had made the mistake, as had some others, of drinking a few beers prior to the race and then tried to eat some food to help soak up the beer. Big mistake.

The start of the race, Greg had run a 5 mile race that morning

Beer 1, done

He got air!

Mike and the others did pretty well the first couple of "laps", Ron was drinking champagne because he doesn't drink beer so he was doing pretty well.

Running down to the turn around point

It's a race!

Mike wasn't feeling very well after his third beer and then I heard someone say, "Mike's puking!" He must have planned this because then he started to feel better!

Right before the puking incident

Ron "won" the entire thing, but he disqualified himself since he wasn't drinking beer like the rest of the guys.  Mike had to run a penalty lap because he had puked and he won the entire thing!

On his way to the penalty lap and victory

It took him about 18 minutes to do the entire thing, but he had a lot of fun even though he puked. It was entertaining to watch everyone and I think that it is definitely going to become an annual thing.

I'm content to just watch and take photos, though!

Have you ever done the beer mile? Would you?

  1. No have never done the beer mile but would be fun to try once... But probably more fun to just watch.

  2. Hahaha that's hysterical. I am SO not a fan of puke, though. I'd be running from the sight!

  3. Oh I'd do one and I'd puke for sure. Or take like 30 min to run a mile. I can't chug beer so that would slow me down plus I'd be drunk by can #2.

  4. I would not do a beer mile ... but a champagne or sangria mile ... just sayin'. ;)

  5. We had a friend who did one. I'm not sure I could get on board with it. I love a cold beer after a race, but during.... especially in the Arizona heat....I'm really not sure. But sangria - that has fruit in it, so it's basically a sports drink, right? I'd be willing to watch, though.

  6. This sounds like so much fun but also like it could lead to some serious stomach problems all at the same time. Congrats to Mike! I might have to arrange something like this.

  7. I feel like this would be the only way to get some of my crazy friends to run with me.

  8. Sounds like crazy fun. I'm such a lightweight there is NO WAY I'd be able to do this. Not spectating is a different story...

  9. That might actually be worse than the BBQ mile my local running store does. I think it would be incredibly entertaining to WATCH though! :D

  10. I think I would consider a "margarita mile". I'm not a beer drinker. Have you ever watched the Youtube video of the Olympic runner who did a beer mile in like 5 minutes? That included the time it took to get the beer down (though I'm not sure if he might have shotgunned it).

  11. Challenge Accepted. ;)

I wish I had been there to spectate. I'm pretty sure there was a lot of laughter.
