It's Cold in Rochester

This week it has been extremely cold in Rochester, often the real feel has been below zero sometimes double digits.  I know that I said that I will still run outside in the winter, and this remains true, but this week I just wasn't feeling it.

 My workplace

Luckily, Mike and I have the option to use an indoor track at our gym.  If I had to choose between running in the negative temps or the treadmill, my choice would always be outside.  The indoor track gives us another option, and allows us to do some speed work.

Tuesday, I did a different than normal order triathlon. I biked on the spin bike for half an hour, then when Mike got to the gym we headed to the indoor track.  We did a pretty fast speed work session, our workout was 800m, 4x400m, 2x200m, 800m with a half mile warmup and cool down.

Shoe change, old Mirages for biking and Kinvaras for speed work

I was shocked at some of my paces! For the 200s I was running sub-7 minute pace.  One of these days I want to do a time trial for the mile and see how fast I can go! We're going to keep doing speed work at the track on Tuesdays throughout the rest of our marathon training.

After running (and biking for me), we got changed and hit the pool. We did 1,200 yards before calling it quits for the day.

 Swimming essentials

On Wednesday, I hit the indoor track again and ran 5 miles (40 laps).  I got so HOT! My mouth was completely dry and I had that nasty film on my mouth.  I need to stash a water bottle somewhere so I can grab it when I need to (there is a water fountain up there but that would be hard to drink from on the go).

Yesterday, we continued our trend of working out inside and ran with our friend Amber. She had asked me last week to run on the treadmill with her, and since she ran outside with me in the dark and cold back in December I had to say yes. I owed her after all!

Love her! (And we need a better picture together)

We ran 3 miles and I didn't hate it. I liked running in between Mike and my friend. Then we had dinner at Amber and Greg's house.  Right now they are on their way to Miami for the ING Miami Half Marathon, I'm jealous!

The cold weather should break soon, and it is going to really warm up next week, so we will be back to our normal routine this weekend.

How have your workouts been going? Is it really cold where you are?

    1. Thanks Laura! I don't like it either, but I don't really know any different being from Maine and now living in New York. If I moved somewhere warm I probably wouldn't come back though!

    1. Ugh! That's the worst part! I had a headache from the wind (just walking around campus) on Tuesday. It's so cold!

  3. Over here in Oswego it's so cold and so much snow. This Lake Effect weather is no joke...I mean coming from Potsdam when it was just -30 all the time. Anyways...you are better then me as I'm logging a 70 mile week all on the treadmill and probably for the next month...I doubt I'll be outside LOL.

  4. Oh I love Rochester! I didn't know you lived up there! Very nice area :)
And I agree, I cannot wait for this cold to go away again! Our house doesn't hold heat well so this isn't doing good things for our gas bill...

  6. I hear you, Jamie--I'd take below-zero temperature over the 'mill. That being said, though, I actually did a treadmill run after my swim this morning; I didn't want my wet hair to freeze outside. ;)

  8. How lucky that you have access to an indoor track! That would be much better than the treadmill.

I'm lucky that I don't need to run indoors very often. Even in the winter, it's never too cold in the SF bay area - although sometimes a good storm will drive me inside to the treadmill.

  9. No way am I outside!! Too cold! It was -5 here yesterday morning and that's not even the real feel! Yuck! I didn't even want to take the dog out. ;) Great job this week!

  11. It's 75 in Houston today. Yeah I know that sounds mean. BUT just wait until April and May when I'm dying cause it's already 95. I treadmill during the hot, almost never during the "cold".

    1. Haha that's actually not too mean for me, because I'd rather run in the cold than the heat. 75 is too hot for running (perfect for life though). My perfect running temperature is 45-55 degrees :)

  12. I agree, I would almost ALWAYS rather run outside in the snow, cold, whatever, than on the treadmill, but when you have a friend (or two) to help chat away the miles, the treadmill is a little more bearable. I wish I had an indoor track, but running in circles for 5 miles may test my mind!!! You did awesome!

  13. You are a rockstar. Its been too cold for me this past week and I refuse to run in the darkness - so I've turned into a treadmill lover.

  14. I have been OUTSIDE!!! It's been in the LOW 20's in NYC, and the "feels like" temp has been in the low teens/single digits. Although I've been dressing layers, it has been so exhilarating to complete my runs, cold, tired, and really not sweating so much ;-) I loved checking out out the RIT gym when I would visit my in-laws in Rochester, it was so nice!!!

  15. It's been absolutely freezing here in PA too! I haven't worked out outside in forever! I'm all about skiing and doing winter things outside but I'm a total wuss when it comes to running in the cold!

  16. I have no intentions of running outdoors any time before 3/21 st, but I do wish it were warmer so I could put my snowshoes back on and head up to the ADK. Stay warm! It's meant to warm back up by next week!

  17. It is freezing here and I have been forced to workout indoors for the past 6 days and it looks like possibly tomorrow too!!
But at least I can work out...last year I was in the hospital so I will take the cold!!
