Thoughts During a 19 Miler

When you are running for over 3 hours, in our case 3:10:57, you have A LOT of time to think about things. I don't run with music so that means that I have to entertain myself in other ways, sometimes I get lucky and a song gets stuck in my head but that hasn't been happening lately.  Probably because I'm not working this month so I am not in the car listening to the same five songs being played over and over on the radio.

Today I had a few thoughts while out for our run and I thought I would share them with you.  I don't exactly remember when some of these thoughts occurred but they were sometime between 0-19 miles!

How could I have forgotten my watch? Good thing Mike is nice to me and keeps telling me the splits and miles.

I feel like we are going too fast.

See, we were going too fast.

Jeez, that car could have moved over a little bit more don't you think?!

Oh no, now I have to get my energy gel out.  Hopefully I can open it.  

This energy gel is definitely working, but now we are probably going too fast.

Yep, too fast!

I hate running over grates, it is one of the most annoying things ever.

I wonder how Crystal is doing in her half marathon?

I feel bad, but I need to stop.  I don't know what is going on but I feel some major anxiety going on.

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z. Now I know my ABCs next time won't you sing with me?

There have been a lot of cyclists out today.

Why do I keep kicking my ankle with my other foot? I must be getting tired.

I wish I had my watch, but I'm kind of glad I don't have it.

Just get to that kid playing basketball.

Jeez, buddy do you really need to block the sidewalk? Oh, you are moving your car forward, how nice of you.

I need to stop again.  Ugh, what is wrong with me?

Mike just said there is 1/4 of a mile left.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

YES!! WE'RE DONE!

Oh yes, I really do sing the alphabet to myself while running.

  1. Love love love love!! I always run without music also and all that above randomness is what goes through my mind too. An to totally sell myself out... One thing I think while cars are passing is "How awesome am I huh?? You don't know this but I'm on mile xx right now. I pretty much rock." <---- true story. Don't judge, it mentally helps to pump myself up. Hahaha!!

    Thank you for thinking of me today. I can't wait to blog but need to rest. Such an amazing experience. I don't know what I'd do without more experienced and way more awesome people like you helping me along the way.

  2. My mind wonders all over the place-- usually my to do list for the day, meal planning ideas, or just focusing on the people around me and getting to the next mile marker. Congrats on your 19!

  3. I flip flop between running with music and running without. I tend to work over any loose ends at work, or things weighing on my mind. I find I have far more clarity when I'm running. I'd like to think I'm the better version of me while I'm out running. Truth is I'm usually just too tired for the nonsense and I only expend the energy for productive thoughts :-)

  4. I tend to picture what the next mile marker looks like. Meaning when I'm at mile 5 I know what the mile 6 area looks like and I picture myself there. I also tend to think about what I'm going to eat after a hard run. Sometimes I can run for hours and not think food, but other times all I can think about it when good thing I can eat after. I also think about the people I pass or the people who pass me. Parts of songs that make me sing out loud. I wonder if I really can run 26.2 in a few weeks!

  5. Nice 19! my mind wanders all over the place. Today, because my run was in the pool, lots of my thoughts were on the Olympic medley girl in the next lane. She was very splashy.

  7. That's too funny! I don't run with music either so my thoughts wander all over the place. When Allan and I ran yesterday he asked me after about an hour if I talked to myself while I ran. I wouldn't say I talk out loud to myself but I can't lie and say I haven't answered my own thoughts a time or two.

  8. Well, I run most of the time now with other people, so, I am focused on them and our conversations about everything in our lives. When I run by myself, I usually run with music and/or listen to talk radio. But, my mind also wanders all over the place too!

  9. You are right - there is so much time to think about plenty of random things!!! Ha you are too funny. Yesterday some of my thoughts were -
    Why is that guy sitting on the bench 2 miles in with a gas can?
    Do I smell gasoline?
    I swear he's going to blow me up.
    Shit, I have to turn around and go back - I'm afraid.
    Oh thank goodness, there's a another runner and he looks slow enough - yay! I'll just turn around early and hang with him to get by the random dude with the gas can.
    (I AM that paranoid).
    Then, how far to the next port-a-pottie.
    Hhmmm....cheese is not my friend.
    This hill sucks. If I stop half way up, take a break, cry, and then keep going, that's okay, right?
    Oh look, a nice ditch to curl up in and sleep.
    Why the hell did I sign up for a marathon that is ALL hills??? I'm friggin stupid.
    That biker just clipped me - wtf


    I could go on and on.... :)

  10. You're so funny! I had a long list of random thoughts today too. I'm just too tired to remember them right now!

  13. I like to break my long run up in my head. I usually tell myself, ok this is easy, it's like your 3 mile work loop, etc. I also like singing to myself
