Festival on the Green 5K Race Recap

First, if you haven't noticed yet you no longer need to use .blogspot for my blog's address, from now on it is www.fromcouchtoironwoman.com.  Don't worry the old address still redirects to the blog, though!

A few weeks ago Mike and I signed up for a local 5K as a replacement for a three mile training run.  If it had been on a Saturday we wouldn't have signed up, but it was on a Friday so it fit our marathon training schedule!

I was a bad blogger and I didn't take any photos so here's one of Bernie from earlier in the day to hold you over!

  Such a tough life!

The only bad part about the race being on a Friday is that it started at 6pm!  After Mike got home from work we got ready and headed out.  We had picked up our packets on Thursday but it was a half an hour or so drive to the start of the race.

After arriving, we quickly stretched and ran a brief warm-up.  The announcer for the race provided a few brief announcements, that you couldn't really hear unfortunately, and then everyone headed to the start to line up.

As soon as the race started I tried to maintain a sub 8 minute pace but after about .3 miles I knew that it wasn't going to happen.  It was about 80 degrees outside without a cloud in the sky!  I just focused on maintaining a decent pace and ran up the first hill.

Luckily there was a water stop around 1 mile and I took a little sip and then dumped the rest over my head.  After rounding the corner, there was another hill to run up.  We had been told during the announcements that we were going to turn down into a park and before that even happened I saw the lead runner!

Once down in the park there was another water stop and I continued to dump most of it over my head.  Unfortunately, this part of the race was on a trail.  It wasn't that technical but there were some roots and a slight hill at the end of the trail.

As soon as I got back on the road, I rounded the last corner and took water again.  This time I only dumped it over my head!

The last mile of the race was the worst because the sun was right in your eyes.  I did end up passing a few people in the end and tried to catch up to one girl who had passed me.   The last .5 miles were downhill and I picked up the pace.  Unfortunately I didn't catch the girl!

I headed into the finish and saw Mike on the sidelines cheering me on.  Immediately after finishing I grabbed two cups of water and dumped one over my head.  After taking a small sip out of the second cup I dumped that one over my head too.

My finishing time was 28:23, which considering the conditions isn't too bad.  Mike finished in 23:56, he does so much better in the heat than me!

We didn't stay for the awards but I actually won my age group (out of 6 runners) and Mike came in second in his age group (out of 4 runners).

Overall it was a nice race and it broke up our training a little bit!

Did anyone else race this weekend?  How did it go?

  6. I'm like you- I start out feeling okay in the heat, but figure out pretty quickly that it's gonna affect me more than I'd like. Congrats to Mike- is that a pr for him? And congrats to you both for another 5k done, and age group placings!

    1. Thanks Laura! I know what you mean, Sunday I started out too fast and then crashed and burned (literally and figuratively).

It's not a PR but it was less than a minute above his current PR! He is going to crush his PR on a flatter course/at a normal racing hour :)

  10. Awesome race and congrats for the win!

I don't have much experience with running in the heat. The majority of my runs tend to be early in the morning so it's pretty comfortable. That might change since the forecast is calling for 90s in the next few days.
