What Motivates You?

There are a lot of things that can motivate you, but one thing that is motivating me right now is this:

Oh yes, that Jamie is in fact me

You're probably wondering what that is, right?  Well I hope that I'm not the only one who does this but I do Google myself every once in awhile.  A few years ago I noticed that the results for a high school cross country meet were still online and I decided to check recently to see if it was still there.  Even though this is from 1999, it still is!  It is the only time from cross country that I can probably find but it is something.  It's probably important to mention that it was only a 3 mile course (I figured that out by using a pace calculator), but that's still faster than any time I have clocked recently.

I'm shocked that my 14 year old self could run that fast!  Probably not for the reason that you are thinking, though.  There was something unfortunate that happened to me before that meet.  Another student pulled me off of the bleachers before gym class and I fell to the ground bruising my tailbone, ONE day before the meet!

I couldn't swallow pills back then, sad I know, but I do remember my cross country coach giving me children's medicine (some sort of pain reliever) at the team dinner.

I know that I walked during that race.  I was in pain from my tailbone, but more importantly I probably walked almost every meet back then, so how did I pull an 8:15 average pace?  Probably because I was 14, that's why.

That's my motivation right now, I want to beat my 14 year old self!  What's yours?

In completely unrelated news, anyone want to run with me (and Mike)?

We are trying to put together a team for the Reach the Beach Relay in New Jersey on October 12-13.  Right now we have 7 people and are looking for 5 more!  It's going to be a lot of fun and I'm going to get to meet a whole bunch of new people including Christine (she's from near where Mike grew up so she must be cool)!  If that wasn't enough, a former high school cross country teammate of mine is going to be running with us.  He even told me that my blog is what inspired him to start running again after a 5 year hiatus from the sport.

Want to have some fun?  Want to run 200 miles in 24 hours with 11 other people? (Come on, you know you do!)

    1. I know, I'm really excited I can't wait!

Nothing wrong with that, I think we all chase some former self in one way or another!

  2. What motivates me? Well, my team (team utopia) sure motivates me to get out there and run and try to keep up with some of them! We did a track workout last nite at SUNY Albany and we did 7x 600- one every 6 minutes! I tried to stay up with and finally stay ahead of some of my teammates- beat most of them in the last 600!

  3. What awesome motivation! And I thought you were pretty speedy already :)
As for what motivates me? I've never really stopped to think! I think it's probably my sister. She has always been naturally athletic and I admire that in her so I strive to be as un-naturally athletic as I can be LOL

    1. Hopefully we can run together sometime soon, it would be fun to have you as a teammate!

I think kids motivate a lot of parents :)

  5. That's so cool you found your old track results! I guess what motivates me is my love for the sport, and the constant desire to be the best runner I truly can be. And wine :)

  6. Hello fellow New Yorker here.

I have enjoyed reading your blog the past few monthes(that sounds so stalker-ish since you don't know me! sorry I swear I'm normal!)

I am dying to do a relay but also hoping to be training for a fall marathon at that time. So unsure about the time commitment. Wish I could just say "YES, me, me pick me"! night now. I will be keeping my eye on your blog to see if you still need team mates. A month into a new school year I know I will be ready for something fun.

We're actually going to run our first marathon 11 days before the relay, yea we're crazy. If we are still looking for people I will definitely mention something though!

  7. That's neat! I'm recently joining the running world - for me it's a way to develop discipline, it's a daily challenge to see who wins, my will or my body.

I've checked that site out before but it doesn't have cross country results! It is a pretty helpful resource though.
