How Far We've Come

Today is our Runniversary!

The only useful thing about Timeline

If you are wondering what Week 1 Day 1 of Couch-to-5K (C25K) entails, here you go:

Alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes

Wow, it's hard to believe that's how we started this journey!  The first few weeks of C25K weren't difficult, but my knee did start to bother me almost immediately.  It was more challenging as the weeks went on and our running time increased, but we got through it!  We only had to repeat one day of the program because I couldn't finish a run that we had started on a trail.

In only one year we have run 15 races each (I DNF one and Mike didn't run Around the Bay) and three of those were half marathons!

In honor of our Runniversary, we ran today!  Honestly, it just happened to work out that way with our training plan, we might not have otherwise.

I wore my new Canari cycling jersey

Now, why would I wear a cycling jersey to run in?  Well, today wasn't just a running day, we had our first brick workout of this training cycle!

When I made our plan I had the brick workouts include 5 miles biking and 3 miles running.  We ended up going to where I work because we still don't have locks for our bikes and we stored them in my office while we were running.  Not the best simulation of a transition but it will have to do for now!

The bike route was a little hilly, which is good since our duathlon and triathlon both have hills.  I ended up doing 5.09 miles in 22:32, which is 13.6 mph.  Not too bad considering the terrain!

The 3 mile run felt horrible in the beginning but I still hit decent paces:

Mile 1 - 9:03 pace
Mile 2 - 8:48 pace
Mile 3 - 8:50 pace

Total Time: 26:43
Average Pace: 8:54 minutes per mile

Mike was faster than me during both the bike and run, but I had him in sight most of the time!  Overall, it was a pretty successful brick workout but we definitely need to figure out a better way to simulate the transition.

I would say that we celebrated our Runniversary the best way possible, doing what we love!

When is your Runniversary?

  2. Yay!! I love the jersey!!!

You both are such overachievers. You are doing beyond awesome. Your running paces were still way better than mine.

My runniversary this time around will be January 3rd. So there is still plenty of time for improving.

    1. Thanks Crystal I like it too!

Haha I don't know about overachievers but I guess we do a lot. The paces were good, I just felt horrible during it because of the transition from biking.

      You will definitely improve!

  3. Happy Runniversary Jamie and Mike! Mine is the 6th of August and I started out exactly the same; C25K W1D1 :)

I loved doing brick training when I was getting ready for my triathlon. I loved that it mixed things up a little bit. I used to park my car at my 'transition' spot and use that as my transition area! It must have looked strange but it worked!

    1. Thanks Kristin! That's a good date, one day before Mike's birthday :)

We could do that too, we would just have to take two cars since both of our bikes don't fit in one haha and we can't risk leaving them on the rack since someone could steal them.

  6. So cool! Happy Runniversary! You are getting darn speedy, girl!

Mine return-to-running runniversary is August 31. This year will be 2 years...after not running (or pretty much doing any exercising) since November of 2001. No lie.

What about if you two take turns?

    1. Thank you!!

That's great that you got back into it after so many years off!

We could do that but then it would take forever to get it done, haha.

  7. Congratulations!!! I wear my YMX biking shirt for running sometimes. Who the hell really cares anyway? I wear my running stuff when I bike, too! :)

I have no idea when I really started running. Ward and I ran a bit when before kids (9/10 years ago)...and I hated it. Really hated it. I think Tucker was about 2 when I started again....so that is about 6 years ago.

    1. Thanks Jen! You've been running for awhile!

I don't really care, haha, we usually wear running clothes while biking but since my cycling jerseys came I figured I would wear it. It didn't feel too bad to run in, so that's good!

  8. Happy runniversary! This week was my tri-aversary (thanks - I had actually forgotten). I didn't really start "running" (if that is what you'd call my slow 10-15 min/mile slogs) until after tri season. I got through my first two tri's walking the "run" leg. So my "runniversary" is probably more like sometime in October though I slowly added it so I don't have a solid date. Still trying to build up to really "running".

  10. You guys are doing great! Brick workouts are so tough. Your legs are so angry right off the bike, aren't they?! :) Good times!
My runnerversary is...well, hmmmm My first 5k was in 2000 but I didn't do much until I started triathlons in 2002 and my first 10k and half were in 2004 so let's say spring of 2004. :) I know, I'm confusing!

    1. Thanks Jenny! Yea my legs weren't happy and I felt horrible the entire run even though my paces were good. Hopefully it gets better each week.

You are confusing, but I love it!

I don't know my exact date that I started, although I know the race I was training for was 3 years ago in May.

The only reason I know is because of Facebook Timeline haha, but if I didn't have that I might not know the exact date :)

  14. On my most recent comeback from the suburbs of Fat city in Lazy county it has yet to be a year, but I too am looking forward to seeing where I'll be by then.

You two have made amazing progress, and should rightly be proud of your accomplishments !

  16. It looks like under 9 minute pace is getting to be frequent. I'm so excited for you!

Sorry this comment is a bit out of order. I actually read your latest post first about the five miles under 9 minutes.

    1. No worries! Read in any order that you want :)

Low 9's and sub 9's are becoming frequent, I'm shocked actually! I can't wait to race, although for the relay I have a lot of hills but I can get through it.
