Thoughts on the Clean Food Challenge

Wow, are the seven days of the Clean Food Challenge really over?  Yesterday was my last day of the challenge, some people will be finishing up today, since I needed to eat toast with peanut butter before our 11 miler today (11 miles in 1:53:01 with our first 3.4 miles at 32:18)  Plus, you wouldn't expect me to eat clean on my birthday would you?

Rena, we figured out the self-timer!

Yesterday was a semi-clean day since Mike and I went to hang out with Rena and her boyfriend in Ithaca for the day, more on that later.

Breakfast: Oatmeal with blueberries and coconut milk and a hazelnut latte from Dunkin Donuts (not clean)

Lunch: Thai Chopped Chicken Salad from Panera (mostly clean except the dressing and wonton strips) and an apple

Snack: Bubble tea: almond milk black tea with tapioca (I'm assuming this is not 100% clean)

Dinner: Leftover stuffed pepper and butternut squash from Friday

Now that this challenge is over I want to try to continue to eat as clean as possible, but add back a few things that I enjoy eating here and there.  Since I am fairly confident I do not have a gluten allergy I will add whole grain bread back into my diet.  I have also missed peanut butter this week, I didn't want to shell out more money on clean peanut butter so I went with tahini butter instead, so that is coming back! (I live on peanut butter and jam sandwiches for lunch every work day).

That said, the few times I did not feel like myself, yet like my old self, during this challenge were the times that I ate dairy. I don't want to completely eliminate it from my diet, but I think that my body would really appreciate me consuming less cheese.

This challenge also helped curb some of my soda cravings, which I am thankful for!  I also lost about 2 pounds, but I am sure that most if not all of that was water weight.

Would I do a clean eating challenge again?  Yes I would, but I would need to prepare food ahead of time.  I think I experienced a slight anxiety attack the second day and that was definitely not the intention of the challenge!  I was supposed to feel better, which I did in the end, and my unpreparedness caused me some anxiety.  Next time I will be more prepared!

Thanks again Emilie for a great challenge!

As I said earlier, Mike and I hung out with Rena and her boyfriend yesterday.

We went out to lunch, drove the course of the half marathon all four of us are running in less than a month (it took us a couple of times to drive the exact course but it doesn't seem too hilly) and went out for bubble tea!

A better picture than last time!

Rena also gave me a birthday present, lots of yummy running fuel.

I had the Chocolate Raspberry GU on our run today

It was so much fun hanging out with them and I can't wait to see them again at the Skunk Cabbage Half Marathon!

Don't forget to report your time for the "One Year Older" Birthday Virtual Race on the "Finish Line" post, here!

Do you like to drive the course of a race you've never run before?

  2. That's a really sweet gift from Rena! I've never driven the course of a race before running it but I think that's because I don't run with music so I enjoy taking in the sites and the novelty of seeing everything for the first time keeps me entertained.

    1. I agree, I was really surprised she gave me a gift!

That's a good reason not to drive it, we also run without music but I don't like surprises!

  3. How was the chocolate raspberry?

I'm glad that you figured out the self timer. Now, we can use it next time we meet! Third time's the charm on pictures.

I still haven't run your race yet. But I will though near midnight. It still counts if I do it at 11PM, right? And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

WOO HOO!!! I totally forgot to take a pic of myself today and the girls for our run. Darn! Will you still count my run? We did do 13 miles!

  8. Congrats on making it the whole week, yay!! And Happy Birthday to you! I'm bummed I can't join the 3.4 run... need to rest my ankle, boo. :(
Did you say "hi" to Ithaca for us? :) I ran the skunk cabbage 10k and half a few times, it's a great run. Definitely has a few hills, but you're used to that... aww, makes me miss NY!

    1. Thank you Laura! I'm sorry you couldn't participate :( I hope your ankle gets better soon, I know how that goes!

Ithaca was really fun, our first time there! The hills for Skunk Cabbage are nothing compared to our first half marathon. Come visit sometime!

  9. Great job on the challenge!

I think driving the course is a great idea if you have the means to, so you know what to expect on race day. There is nothing worse than a surprise hill at the end!

  10. Just found you, so excited to find someone with the same aspiration. Tempe Arizona ironman is my final goal. Seems so unattainable somedays. My first sprint tri in April! Have you tried one yet? Anyway,hi. Glad your here to read. Happy belated birthday I'm off to find out what in the world the stick is!

    1. Awesome goal! We haven't decided which one we want to do, but since Ironman Lake Placid is the closest to us that will probably be the one! (Since they are so expensive, have to save on travel/lodging).

Our first duathlon is in May and our first sprint triathlon is in June. That's it for this year since we have our first marathon in September! Next year will be more about triathlons, we will probably do the Musselman Tri which is a half iron distance!

      The stick is great: https://www.thestick.com/

  11. Happy happy birthday!! Sounds like you had a great time!! I'm so interested in this half marathon! Where is it and does it smell like skunks the whole run?!

    1. Haha! That made me laugh! It's in Ithaca (starts on Cornell's campus) and no I don't think it smells like skunks the entire time! Even though we've heard that skunk cabbages don't smell very good.

Here's the link for it: http://www.fingerlakesrunners.org/wordpress/races/road-races/skunk-cabbage-classic/

Thank you for the birthday wishes!
