One Thing Missing

Have you noticed something missing in my photos?

Yes, that's how I read

A ring, or two, perhaps?

That's because we run "naked".  No, not literally naked and not the other "naked" you see bloggers writing about occasionally (no electronics, e.g. a watch, an iPod).

We do have rings, but they are left at home more often than not.

 First week of marriage

I have never worn my rings while working out, sleeping, cleaning, showering, swimming and definitely not while running.  Mike is the same way!  We actually take our rings off as soon as we get home from work and if we go out again, we sometimes forget to put them back on!

Does this mean that we don't love each other? Definitely not!  A ring is a symbol, albeit an important one, of our love and commitment to each other.  We actually don't wear our rings often in order to take care of them more, I would hate for them to get ruined or lost!

 Just another picture for fun!

I hope you don't think this means that we have a lax attitude about our marriage!

I know a few other people who don't wear their rings, for various reasons.  My relay teammate Ali wrote a post about why her ring is missing in many of her photos, although she does wear it occasionally.  My parents haven't worn their rings, at all, for almost as long as I can remember and they are still happily married!

I know that when we get deep into Ironman training that we won't wear our rings very often at all, mainly just to work, and that is fine with me!  Other than our wedding, completing an Ironman is going to be the most momentous occasion of our lives and I can't wait to see my husband at the finish line, without our rings!

How do you feel about wearing a ring while working out?  Do you wear your wedding ring all the time or occasionally?

  1. I very rarely wear my engagement ring when I work out, and when I do it's usually because I forget to take it off. When we get married, I'm getting a plain white gold band so that I can wear it w/o taking it off (I love wearing my e-ring but don't want to do anything to damage it) and not have to worry about anything getting damaged. C jokes that he is going to get me a giant CZ to wear when I work out so I can have my bling w/o worrying about something happening to my actual ring =)

    1. That's a good plan! I agree, I would never want to damage my rings!

What your fiance said is pretty funny!

  2. I used to wear my rings all the time, night and day but when I started to lose weight it got a bit dicey with them slipping all over the place. I tried them on the other day and they slide straight off now so some re-sizing is in order.
I can definitely see the idea behind not wearing them all the time to preserve them though... Mine look very beat up so I wish I had started out with the same attitude as you and Mike :)

    1. Mike's is starting to look a little beaten up even with how careful we are :( We will have to see if they can take care of the little bit of silver it has on it (other than that it is tungsten).

Mine are white gold so I will have to have them re-dipped eventually since the acid on my hands have started to remove the "white" part!

  3. YAY!!! so cool to read your story. PS: I don't know if I say "YAY" as much in real life as I type it. BUt I promise you the enthusiasm is still there ;) lol

I am getting so EXCITED about running with you.

also I love love love your rings! They look so you. I put my ring on today for a stroller walk ;) only b/c I'm actually self conscious when I don't wear it. Weird I know. I think it's because I have a son....so I'm always feeling the need to tell people I'm married. :P lol

    guilty?

    maybe.

    1. Haha, yea "yay" isn't really a word that most people say in real life. It is much better for typing!

Thank you, so many people I know have the same engagement ring but we all have different wedding bands!

  4. I never wear any jewelry for a workout. I think you're perfectly reasonable to not wear them.

    1. Thanks Marcia!

I do wear some "jewelry" but they are piercings, nose, belly button and 6 ear piercings! I can't even take some of them out, haha.

  5. I'm the opposite- I never take mine off! But it's fairly unobtrusive, the stones are partly set down in to be less likely to catch on things, which I really like. And it's a snug fit, so I haven't had to worry about it flying off! But absolutely do what works for you-- you both know you're married, that's all that matters. :)

    1. And that's perfectly fine too :)

I always tell Mike the same thing, we know we are married!

  6. I freak out if I leave the house without mine on, but mostly because I'm terrified of losing them and as long as they're on my finger I know where they are! I pretty much only take them off when I shower and when I bake mess/hands on things like meatloaf.

    1. I freaked out one time too when I left the house and I wasn't wearing them and I actually went back home during one of my breaks to go get them! Now it is habit to just put them on in the morning after I get dressed.

I definitely agree with the messy foods, I would hate to have something gross stuck in my rings!

    2. While I was working one day, I actually made Dan go home and find where I left my rings because it was bothering me so much that I could not remember where I had taken them off! And he delivered them to me at work. Paranoid much, definitely!

  7. I am the SAME WAY! I never wear my rings when I run, clean, etc and I think it's safest that way!

    1. I agree, it is definitely safe! Some of our friends think we are weird, but that's alright!

  8. My rings went through the wash and only my engagement ring came out. :( My band is still missing. I've been wearing my grandma's 25th anniversary band but it's too big and I'm scared I'm going to lose it so lately I haven't been wearing anything. But when I did have both, I typically wore them all the time, just so I wouldn't lose them! Either way, there's always an invisible ring there. ;)

    1. Oh no! :( That's sad! I would be scared of losing it too.

Haha, we definitely have an invisible ring too! :)

  9. I am not married, but I wear two rings all the time. I never take them off! My parents have been married for almost 40 years and my Dad has never worn his ring. They are still going strong!

    1. I know some people who are the same way!

Lots of guys don't wear their rings for various reasons, work, etc. As long as everyone is fine with it I don't see a reason to be worried :)

  10. I go through phases of wearing my rings. I love my rings. For years the sat in my drawer after I scratched my first baby's sweet head with my engagement ring :( I just recently started wearing them again...mostly just my wedding ring.

    1. Aww, yea that would make me not want to wear my rings either!

A lot of people do that, just wear their wedding ring. I would feel like I was wearing nothing since my wedding band is so small!

  11. I wear my rings all the time except when my workout involves pull-ups.

    1. Yea I would think pull-ups would be difficult to do wearing rings! I would feel like they were pinching me!

  12. Had my wedding ring cut off while pg (and severely retaining fluid) with my first. Had it repaired and wore it until I got too heavy for it (taking it off while pg with 2nd). Wore it a bit more and then got too heavy for it again. Just started trying to wear it again recently and I still forget it a lot as the habit is relatively broken. And I fear losing them or some swelling while working out so I usually take them off. But after almost 21 years together (almost 17 married), I'm really not concerned with it.

    1. I feel the same way! Mike and I have been together for almost 8 years (married for almost 2) and I'm not really too concerned. We do love our rings though but if we have to take them off we have to take them off! I'm afraid of swelling while working out too so that's another reason I don't wear them.

  13. My wedding ring tends to hang out in the nice little silver heart, I wear it when I'm going out, but, otherwise it hangs out there. During my fatter days it didn't fit :(. But fits again now. I never wear it running, working out, or during the day (being a SAHM is just way too messy!). My husband used to wear his frequently but he can't really wear it at work because of H&S rules, and it would look bad if management doesn't follow the rules!

Lots of guys can't wear their rings because of work rules!

  14. I never wear my ring while working out. I am too worried I will lose it or hit it on something. MY husband wears his all the time because he can't get it off his finger:) We have been married for 15 years together 17.

    1. Haha that's funny about your husband. I would hate for that to happen though!

Yea I don't want to bang mine on anything either!

  15. I keep my ring on all the time but it isn't a traditional style wedding ring. It is very slim and light weight. I had my active lifestyle in mind when I picked it out....no pokeys to cramp my running. Dear hubby keeps his on when running and diving and I made sure his was sturdy to put up with his intensely tough job. But he does take it off when he gives me massages and sometimes forgets to put it back on.

But all in all, the ring is just a symbol. Wearing or not wearing a ring doesn't make or break the marriage. Love is stronger than any metal.

Thanks for this post and it was eye-opening to learn some people can't wear their rings due to work rules. Go figure!

    1. I told Mike that my ring couldn't be too big or too high of a setting for my job (sign language interpreter)! I poke myself enough as it is without a big ring getting in the way haha.

I think that my dad's job (works for a hydro company and is a lobsterman) is one reason why my parents don't wear their rings anymore. Lots of highly conductive jobs have rules about rings! Mike is an electrical engineer but he does more of the design work right now, maybe in the future he won't be able to wear it though!

  16. We are the same way too! Even now as I type this I'm not wearing my ring and honestly Allan may or may not have worn his ring to work today. I know he's going to be outside and on days when he's not sitting at a desk on his computer he often doesn't wear his ring. Now that I work from home I go DAYS without wearing my rings!

    1. Love it! If we have nowhere to go on the weekends we can go a few days without wearing them at all too! (And of course I'm not wearing it right now while I type :) )

  17. As you said, it's a symbol. My parents were married for 20 (?) years, and I don't remember them wearing their rings, just because they don't like wearing rings (or other jewelry). I think that's fine. It's not that you take your ring of in order to not let other people know that you are married. Marriage is about other things than the ring.

    1. Completely agree with you!

Don't get me wrong I love my rings and I'm pretty sure Mike loves his, haha, but I would rather have him than the ring!

I don't like wearing jewelry either so it was really weird to get used to wearing a ring, which is another reason I think I take it off so often!

  18. I don't my rings when I run either. I think the only time I wear them is when I go right from work to my run club workouts because I don't want to lose them. My fingers swell up too much when I run so I can never get the rings off after ward.

    1. Yea I don't even do that, I usually will bring my ring box and put it somewhere safe haha!

I hate it when it feels like your rings are stuck!

  19. My ring catches on my gloves at work, I change gloves two hundred million times a day. I love my husband and I love the ring he got me. But I also know it would be for nothing if I died from a blood born pathogen. I pick the gloves.

  20. I don't usually wear my rings while working out. I usually wear it otherwise. My husband is not allowed to wear his ring at work. It's considered a safety hazard. So our hands are naked often.
