Clean Food Challenge Planning

I just had a moment of panic in the grocery store.

Tomorrow I am starting Emilie's Clean Food Challenge (CFC) and I wanted to purchase everything that I would need for the week. When I realized that I was going to have to buy dried beans and soak them before cooking them, I freaked out and Mike and I put everything that we had in the cart back. I was also worried because I didn't really know what I was going to be able to eat this week.

When I got home I regrouped and decided that soaking and cooking the beans in our crock pot wouldn't be so bad. I'm going to head back to the grocery store tomorrow and pick up everything that I planned on buying, as well as some extra stuff.

During the CFC I can't consume sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol nor any processed foods. (I am going to allow 3 grams of sugar and whatever else is in my gummy vitamins that I take every day). In addition, I can only eat organic and lean meats, like chicken.

The easiest part of this challenge is going to be the no alcohol part. I don't drink very often and the last time I had an alcoholic beverage was the Super Bowl and I probably wouldn't have had any this week regardless of the challenge!

The hardest part will probably be the no dairy and no sugar, but I know I can do it.

Here are some ideas that I have saved on Pinterest for clean meals (some will need to be modified and certain ingredients will need to be omitted):

I also found this article and it says that canned beans as long as they are drained and rinsed are alright, but I'm not sure if they would be acceptable under Emilie's challenge rules.

My plan for the week is something like this:

Breakfast: Oatmeal with fruit or a green smoothie
Lunch: Bean salads or fruit with almond (or sesame) butter and rice cakes
Dinner: Baked sweet or regular potatoes, eggs and rice, soups (I might buy some organic chicken)
Snacks: fruit, vegetables, rice cakes, nuts

I am also going to have to drink 1 GALLON of water everyday! Wish me luck on that one since I barely drink 32 ounces of water a day (1 gallon of water is equivalent to 128 ounces)!

I will keep you posted every day throughout the challenge!

Any recipes or suggestions for me?

  1. Oh, wow - I just don't have the resolve to do something like that. I might be able to live for a few days on oatmeal, baked potatoes, and fruit - if given no other choice. And a gallon of water a day? Just carry a jug with you and sip at it all days - you'll get through it!

    1. It's going to be a challenge for sure! The point is to find out what you are allergic to or have a sensitivity to (even though I'm pretty sure I already know: dairy and caffeine).

I'm drinking my first 20 ounces of water right now!

  2. Hey Jamie! Good luck with the CFC :) I do a detox every now and again and I use a Women's Weekly Detox recipe book. I've made image files of some of my favourites and put them on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/63095200@N07/sets/72157629456430847) I hope there's something in there you can use!

  3. Best of luck! I did her challenge last June and have it all documented on my blog if you need any ideas! I wanted to do the challenge as my good friends Jill and Stacy are doing it - but the birthday thing got in the way and I am going to eat more cake and lots of it!!! :) Soaking beans really isn't hard, it's just time consuming. But I did read the canned beans post as well and about rinsing them really well. I'd go with what you know!

    1. I saw that you did it in June and I've gone back and looked at some of your posts for inspiration! It's too bad you can't do it this time, luckily for me I'm starting today and then my last day is the day BEFORE my birthday :)

I'm still deciding what I am going to do in regard to the beans, I might do both!

  5. Good Luck...that is the way I est at least four days a week..I then splurge on the weekends!! The water won't be too bad as long as your thirsty!! Soaking beans is very easy (just make sure you do it overnight or the beans will be really hard!!!)I buy Red Mill's 13 bean soup mix (its just the beans) and then I add it to my salad and it is really yummy!! There are lot's of great options for eating that can be quite simple too!! Let me know how you make out!!

    1. Hi mom!

Thanks! I will look for that soup mix when I go shopping today. I'm not too worried, except for avoiding the temptations from the vending machine at work might be difficult.

I'll be posting about how it goes everyday (the day after).

  6. Sounds like a great challenge, Jamie... you can do it!! If you decide to only to dry beans, you can also soak and cook large amounts at a time and freeze some for the later. Do you like curries? There are lots of good lentil curry dishes that would fit, just veggies and spices, serve with any grain, and many of those could also be done in the crock pot to make an easy dinner. It should be an interesting week!

  7. This is crazy. I would never be able to drink a gallon of water a day. I'd be constantly leaving class to pee. Power to you for being able to do it!

    1. Oh yea I agree I think it's crazy but, basically, one day down, 6 more to go! Plus, my birthday is the day after and you bet I'm eating "dirty" that day!

I already drank a gallon of water today, no more for me!

    1. The food that you can eat actually gives you more energy than processed food. There's so much junk in the food that people eat it's ridiculous!

I'm definitely going to be eating plenty, I already do without this challenge. It will just be healthier food.

  9. A few weeks ago (actually the first three weeks in January) I had my best friend guest post on my blog because she was doing the Whole Foods cleanse. She has some good recipes for clean eating in the posts she did if you need some ideas. I love sweet potatoes so that one picture looks really good. I have never done a cleanse so I am really no help. But I hope it goes well for you!
