100th Post Announcement

This is my 100th post!

And with such a momentous occasion (ok, maybe it's not that exciting) I have an announcement to make! But you are going to have to wait and read through some back story first, I promise it is worth the wait.

My birthday is on March 4th and it just so happens that it falls during break week at the college that I work at and I always take vacation that week (this is one reason that I am disappointed we are changing to semesters, no more birthday off).

Three years ago my friends and I went to a hockey game and then we all went our separate ways, or so I thought. Mike and I had driven with our two friends and when they drove by our apartment complex I started to get a little fidgety. The only thing I could think of was that Nate, our friend, had to get something at his work but when we drove by that I was really confused. I was still confused when we pulled into Cheesecake Factory's parking lot since Holly and Nate had given up going out to eat for Lent that year.

They had surprised me (and Holly and Nate made my birthday surprise an exception to Lent) and inside were more of our friends, the ones I thought had gone home, waiting for me!

Two years ago, Mike and I were planning our wedding and I had invited some of my bridesmaids over to work on wedding stuff (the same friends who had surprised me the year before). While we were working on things one of my friends asked if she could see our cake topper or something like that. While we were upstairs she kept talking, which if you know her isn't really a big surprise, but I kept trying to back away to go help everyone else who I thought was working on wedding stuff.

Obviously I'm the only one who didn't work that day

When I finally went back downstairs, the whole house had been decorated! They even made me a pizza with turkey pepperoni (or Jamie-approved as all my friends call it) that said "happy birthday" on it! They had surprised me again!

Awesome, right?!

Last year was the first year that I didn't get to hang out with any of my friends on my birthday and, no one knows this except Mike, I was a little sad. Mike had to work and I didn't get to hang out with anyone all day so I felt like my 26th birthday was a bit of a bust.

This year I want it to be different!

So, I am hosting a virtual race for my 27th birthday. That way I will know other people are celebrating with me!

Since my birthday is on March 4th, the race distance is 3.4 miles. I figure most runners and walkers can do that distance since it isn't a far stretch from a 5K.

And since this is a birthday celebration there will be prizes! I have one confirmed, but the rest will most likely be stuff that I purchase. I will announce them all when I figure it out.

I'm going to keep this simple and all you have to do is follow my blog (just click on the Google Friend Connect on the right) and comment on this post saying that you are in! The day before my birthday I will put up a post where you can put your results and a blog post with your race recap if you wish. The winner or winners (I haven't quite decided how I want to do it yet) will be picked using random.org and announced on March 9th.

I hope you sign up for my first virtual race! Please feel free to share this on Facebook, Twitter (and follow me if you aren't yet @couch2ironwoman) and your blogs!

We were going to run anyway, we're probably running 11 miles that day, so why not have other people join with us!?

  7. I love me some virtual races and would be happy to help you celebrate your birthday this way. I am completely annoyed at how people stop making a big deal out of birthdays as you age. Damn it - I made it another year! Celebrate already! I like that you are taking the bull by the horns and just making sure it is an awesome day!

  20. I'll do it! I think I have to run 5 miles that day (according to Hal) but it will be a nice challenge to run the last 3.4 miles at a faster 'race' pace. I never do speed workouts! :) -Steph
