Winter Warriors

Source: google.com via Jamie on Pinterest

Tonight Mike and I continued our new trend of running with other people and went to Fleet Feet in Rochester to take advantage of one of their group workouts. In the winter they have something called Winter Warrior. It's basically the same as their workouts any other time of the year but you can earn points for each workout you do and for some winter races in the Rochester area. If you accumulate 50 points or more you earn a prize.

We hadn't participated in Winter Warrior until tonight so we most likely won't earn enough points to win a prize but it was still nice to run in a slightly different area than we normally do.

Thanks to XLMIC, we were finally able go because headlamps are required at all of the night workouts (we would have bought another one eventually, but we have just been lazy).

When we arrived one of the employees asked if we wanted to do the 2, 3 or 3.5 mile workout. Since we had been planning on doing 5 miles, we said the 3.5 mile workout. They gave us a map and we waited around for the start of the run.

At 6pm on the dot everyone headed outside and the workout began. I have to say that I was a little disappointed because for a "group" workout there wasn't much of a group. Mike and I didn't really know the route very well and we just tried to follow other people. We did split up and Mike ran ahead of me.

There was one guy who ran slightly ahead of me the majority of the workout, so I just followed him. We chatted a little bit when I caught up to him, but other than that I was mostly alone. I had a lot more fun on the group run with Rena and her boyfriend on Wednesday night! I'm hoping that as the weather gets better more people come to the Fleet Feet workouts.

I ended up running the 3.5 miles in 34:33 at a 9:56 overall pace. The roads were pretty slick and I didn't want to get separated from the guy I was "running with" because I would have gotten lost. I had the map but I couldn't read it while I was running and I didn't want to stop or walk just to figure out where I had to go!

When I got back to Fleet Feet, Mike was outside waiting for me. I would say that our first Winter Warrior workout was average and I hope that the next time we go it is a little bit better!

We're Winter Warriors now!

I just have one more short story to tell you all, it's too good not to put one the blog (at least I thought it was).

Mike and I went out to dinner after the workout, which unfortunately goes against one of my goals for 2012 but we have been doing really well so far.

After our drinks came, Mike said "I should have ordered a Bud Light" (he had ordered a Budweiser). I asked him why and he responded, "Because I'm an athlete now".

I just thought I would share because I thought it was pretty funny that he said that!

Have you ever done a group workout? What do you think of them?

  1. Sorry about the disappointing group workout... I think you're right, the group will probably grow with nicer weather. There are a lot of fair-weather-runners out there! I joined a group this summer, right before getting injured and backing out for the season, so I never really got to experience it. They were all training for a Jan marathon, so now I'm back to square one, but would still like to link up with a few other running buddies.

    1. Thanks Laura! It wasn't too bad and we were told that the Tuesday and Saturday workouts that they do have more people. I'm not sure why Friday isn't well attended, but we will probably go to a few more.

    1. Group workouts at a gym count too! I take an indoor cycling class and I definitely wouldn't be able to get through it without everyone else there.

I think next time he will get the Bud Light!

  3. Sounds like the weather kept people away. Hopefully the runs will get better:) I've never run in the dark before since I usually in by myself. But a group run would be fun!

    1. We have been looking around at other running groups in the area too and it seems like some of them run it as a group more than the Fleet Feet workouts. Running in the dark can be scary if you are alone!

Thanks for coming over from Laura's blog!

  5. Group workouts can be pretty hit-or-miss. And sometimes I'm in the mood and sometimes not. That was kind of a bummer run for you in the group sense, but looks like you made the most of it :)

Love that Mike's an athlete now :)

    1. Yea, I was a little disappointed in terms of the no group thing, but the run was still good! We will try again sometime soon and hopefully more people will be there.

Haha, yea it was funny that he said that! We were swimmers so we were athletes before, I guess he is just feeling that way with running now.

  6. I love that you and your man do workouts together and I LOVE group workouts. I am naturally competitive so I find they make me try harder. I can always do better in a group than I can alone!

    1. I agree with you about trying harder! I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a race, but once I found someone I could keep up with I did so that I wouldn't get lost!
