Fitness Friday

Really I should have written this post yesterday and called it "Fitness Thursday", but I was extremely exhausted and didn't feel like writing a post. Sorry!

But now I'm rested and ready to tell you all about what I have been doing the past two days.

One nice perk about working at a college is that they offer faculty and staff fitness classes for half the price of student fitness classes. I looked at the schedule and decided that I wanted to take indoor cycling. I was going to sign up for spinning but it said "not for beginners" and since I've never taken a class before I didn't think I should go for it. I probably would have been fine but I went with indoor cycling instead.

Yesterday was my first day of indoor cycling and, since it was December 1st, it was also my first day of doing the Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred Challenge. To add more fitness to my schedule, Tall Mom on the Run designed a December Challenge encouraging people to run at least a mile a day the entire month. Since I'm a glutton for punishment I signed up!

A challenge? Sure, why not?

It's really not a wonder that I felt like this last night.

So cute

My plan was to go to indoor cycling and then run 1 mile on the treadmill at the gym. Then, when I got home I was going to do the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD and stretch for 20 minutes. I'm happy to say I succeeded!

I loved indoor cycling. The class is based on "perceived exertion" and it is really up to the individual how challenging he or she wants to make the class. In addition to spinning, we also did a few things with hand weights and push-ups (just what I needed knowing Jillian was coming later).

I'm waiting for you!

After the 50 minutes were up, I went into the gym and hopped on the treadmill. Mike had been using the stationary bike and treadmill while I was in the class so I said hi to him. I ran the mile in 11 minutes. It was a little weird running after spinning, but it was good practice for my future triathlons!

When I got home I popped the 30 Day Shred DVD into my laptop and did the 22 minute workout. At this point I was already pretty tired and didn't really feel like doing more push-ups but I got through it. I do have to say that I find Jillian a little bit annoying, but overall the DVD was really good.

The DVD has three levels and I started on Level 1. I'll be interested to see how different Level 2 and Level 3 are, hopefully I can do it!

Today, I was able to run/walk 2 miles with Bernie for a total of 1 mile each. After that I came home and, you guessed it, did my second day of the 30 Day Shred Challenge! I found it a lot more enjoyable knowing what was coming and which exercises I was going to have to do. I am planning on doing each level for 10 days and then on December 31st do the level I enjoyed the most one more time.

In the last two days I was able to rack up 12.5 points for the HBBC! Plus, since I stayed fit both days I could enter into the first two days of Jess's 12 Days of a Fit Christmas.

I hope that I can keep up all of this fitness going on in From Couch to Ironwoman Land!

How are you challenging yourself this holiday season?

  1. Glad to have found your blog through the blog hop. You may have convinced me to add one more challenge to the ones I'm already doing. I'm doing all the virtual races that you are doing!

Great job with HBBC the past 2 days!

  2. No wonder you were exhausted! I'm challenging myself with the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge. It's all about the points and if that's what it takes to get me out the door into the cold I'll take it! So not a fan of winter!

Spinning is one of my favorite cross training workouts!

  3. I have done Jillian's 30 Day Shred before and it totally kicked my butt. I was so happy the day my husband tried to do it with me.... 20 minutes of that is no joke. He had a little more respect for the "20 minutes workouts" I do after that. :)

  4. wow - you were BUSY! Good job on all the exercise. I've done the Shred before and I've found it really effective.

New follower over here from the blog hop!

  5. Awesome way to bust some butt!

  6. From the comments one can say the DVD has yielded good results.
