Seven Things Tuesday: Random Things About Me

Today's Seven Things Tuesday post works out perfectly with Monica's invitation to post seven random things about myself since I was planning on doing that anyway!

Since I am taking another week or two off from running, I contemplated not even writing a Seven Things Tuesday post and then thought that I could just write about myself. Even though I did my story post a little while ago, there is still more to learn about me!

I Am Obsessed With Lighthouses

If you have been reading my blog for a little while, you may have gathered that Mike and I are a little bit obsessed, to put it lightly, with lighthouses. The obsession started when my mom gave Mike a picture of Brant Point Lighthouse (Massachusetts) for his birthday. Since that time we have seen well over seventy or eighty lighthouses. We have seen lighthouses in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Florida, North Carolina, Canada and the Bahamas.

Jeffrey's Hook (Little Red) in New York City

I Only Eat Chicken and Turkey

Plus, other types of non-meat food items. I wanted to be a vegetarian for a little while, but over the years I decided that I would still eat chicken and turkey. I haven't eaten red meat or seafood in a really long time. Mike does eat red meat, he loves steak, but he has grown to accept turkey burgers, turkey bacon, chicken and turkey sausage and chicken and ground turkey in Hamburger Helper. It's a good thing I still eat chicken because we LOVE wings!

I Love Animals

There aren't very many animals that I don't love. I grew up with numerous rabbits, cats, dogs, fish and a guinea pig and as soon as Mike and I could get a pet, we did! We started out with one parakeet, who we named Newton, and he was later joined by Isaac (get it?) and MJ.

Isaac, MJ and Newton

We then were given our first cat Benny and he ruled our apartment for awhile. Of course I got the itch for another cat and we adopted Teagan. Unfortunately, Teagan did not ignore the birds as well as Benny and he knocked their cage over one time and in the process Isaac suffered from shock and passed away. That was a hard time for me, even though he was only a bird. Our two birds now have their own room. Yes, room. We leave the door shut and the cats cannot go in there without our supervision.

This was not Benny's finest hour

Silly Teagan

This January we got our first dog, Bernie! He is a Chow Chow/Black Lab mix and there might be some Bull Mastiff in there.

When we eventually buy a bigger house, I would love for Bernie to have a playmate. For now, though, Bernie will have to settle for chasing our cats around the house. I wish they got along but such is life.

I Love to Read

I have loved to read since a young age and would often spend my summers reading as many books as I could. Just this morning I finished House Rules by Jodi Picoult and I loved it! I then started Lost by Gregory Maguire (he wrote Wicked). I don't think I will like this one as much as House Rules but I think it will still be good! My officemates and I just rattled off a few more books that I should read, since my book pile is non-existent now.

I'd Rather Eat Peanut Butter...

than chocolate. I know, I know. Mike is actually the chocolate lover in our family. We had to compromise for our wedding cake and we had two layers with white cake and one layer with marble cake. I couldn't do full chocolate, though. His family loves chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and I really have to say that I think that is one of the most disgusting things in the world. Sorry!

I can't stand chocolate ice cream either. I do like chocolate with stuff in it, like peanut butter. I was that kid who would eat peanut butter out of the jar with a spoon. Who am I kidding? I still do that!

My order of chocolate preference is: white chocolate, dark chocolate and then milk chocolate. My mom knows us so well that I get a white chocolate bunny and Mike gets a milk chocolate bunny at Easter. She also brings me a peanut butter whoopie pie and Mike a chocolate lover's whoopie pie when they come to visit!

We love whoopie pies!

I Can't Remember the Last Time I got a Haircut

Sad, but true. I never follow the every 4-5 weeks or so rule, I don't even follow the 4-5 months rule! The only time that I followed a haircut schedule was the 9 months or so leading up to our wedding after I met with my hair stylist for the first time.

In 2009, I was in our friends' wedding and I promptly got my hair cut after that. I did the same thing after our wedding. I had to do the PWC (post wedding chop)!

That was in 2010 and I'm pretty sure I have maybe gotten a haircut once or twice since then. I'm not really sure. This summer I didn't cut my hair short, so I am kind of in need of a haircut. Maybe next week when I am on vacation? Eh, probably not.

I Took Hip Hop Dance

That's right, Hip Hop dance. I took it in 2010 because I wanted Mike and I to do a dance into our wedding reception. Sort of like this, but different. Our wedding ceremony was still non-traditional of course. I mean the wedding party walked down the "aisle" (it was outside) to "In My Life" by the Beatles and my parents and I walked to "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" by Elvis.

Yet, I knew I wanted an even bigger shock value at our reception. Our wedding party graciously came up with their own short entrance dances, some developed weeks in advance and others decided moments before walking in, and they were great!

I taught Mike part of one dance that we had learned in the Hip Hop dance class that I took at the college I work at and we practiced it a few times before our wedding. We left one part out, the break dance part, since I don't think I would have been able to do that in a wedding dress nor on carpet.

Would you like to see it?

Ok, here it is. I only included our part of the entrance in order to protect our wedding party members' privacy. I wish I could show you the entire entrance, though!

Now, like Monica, I am going to extend the invitation to anyone who would like to share seven random things about themselves. You can either do it here or write your own post, I would love to learn more about you!

  1. Your wedding reception entry is awesome! And I will probably share the 7 things in a separate post, because it's a lot for a comment.

I am definitely the chocolate person and my bf is the peanut butter person.

I hope you feel better the break from running!

  2. You had a pet guinea pig once? Aww... I ate a guinea pig once. In Ecuador. True story! I like them better as pets though... ;)

I hope you heal soon and can get back to running asap!

  3. Rena - Thanks! We had a lot of fun doing it! I am starting to feel a little better, so hopefully I can run a few miles next week. I'm just going to take it slow though.

Reese - wow, you ate a guinea pig I'm not sure if I could do that! My guinea pig was a good pet, her name was Winnie and she was very cute.

  4. Just saw your post tonite... and it is Wednesday!! LOVED the recap of OMG...brings back happy memories of your reception!! Cute pics of the cats and the birds(RIP Isaac!)Hope your foot/achilles is feeling better...being injured when you are a runner is literally a PAIN!! My chocolate prefences are dark chocolate, milk chocolate and I kinda sorta like white chocolate!! I definitely don't like the chocolate on chocolate cake deal anymore- although I will eat it if it's the only cake around! And I used to like chocolate icecream when I was younger, but much prefer vanilla or different other flavors now!!

  5. Great post!!

I think you got the PB love from me...I can eat it right out of the jar too!! Dad is the chocolate lover in the family :) I really prefer vanilla (frosting and ice cream)... I have never been really big on chocolate.

Hope your foot is starting to feel better!!

  6. Amazing!!!!! I love all these little tidbits about you and love the moose :) hahaha

    1. Haha! Now you know that we are probably going to have to stop and see some lighthouses the weekend of the relay! We haven't seen any of those Canadian lighthouses yet.
